# 53 Our Autumn Years

For us Biddies and Geezers the time has come to realize we ain’t in the summer of our lives any more. But it ain’t winter yet. Sure, there are lots of things we just can not do anymore, or should not do. But this time of our lives was made by God for some very special activities that can only be done in Our Autumn Years.

Take a clue from the leaves of the trees. In the summer they are green and very busy. The leaves produce food for the trees by converting the energy in sunlight into chemical energy that the tree can eat. The structures within the leaves convert the energy and make it possible for the tree to get food. Green chlorophyll is the molecule in the structure of the leaves that takes the energy in sunlight to turn water and carbon dioxide gas into sugar and oxygen gas. But the autumn is that time of year when the leaves gradually lose their green hue and their true colors come out.

I am always in awe at the various brilliant colors of the trees share with us in the autumn. But back to us Biddies and Geezers. We have beautiful things to share in our autumn. I still remember many of the things my grandmother shared with me when ai was a little boy.  They were good for me then. But there are several things she shared that I  have not understood or appreciated until now in the autumn of my life.

And there are things we can do for the generation behind us, like watching their kids while they get a chance to be by themselves.

I could go on and on … but I shall not because this is really about you and you have a different “autumn color” than I do. Share that in …

The Autumn of Your Years.

# 51 Hitting a Brick Wall

Ow! Ow! Ow!

I just hit a brick wall.

These days seniors like us hit many brick walls Some because of health and age issues. Some because of financial problems. The wall I hit was about a relationship.

In my 80+ years of life I have learned much about getting through tough spots. Persistence and prayer usually work. But a brick wall? Butting my head against a brick wall can just get me hurt … not through it. If I keep trying I just get angry and bitter. Not good. I want to live my geezer years in joy!

Why is there a brick wall between me and the person, (a woman) in the relationship? There could be one of two reasons. The obvious reason is that the other person wants no more of me. Forcibly trying to break through that wall would be harassment. I don’t want that. But there is another possibility. It could be that God put the brick wall there because I was getting hurt in the relationship and God was watching my back. Butting my head against a wall that God built is dumb and stupid.

Is there another way? Another way to live my geezer years in joy? Yes there is but there is a little pain involved. I need to change, like look and move in a new direction. Change always requires a little pain … for a while … but it is good pain.

And so I look in a new direction. And see new people. And there are no walls.

I guess God has my back!

#3 Have Faith

#3 Have Faith

The expression “Sometimes Shit Happens” is true for me today as I write this tip to you on how having faith will tune into God’s program of living well. So I must take my own medicine.

What happened? Doesn’t matter. But it was a strong emotional blow to me with no immediate indication of how I would get through it. It is time for immediate First Aid. My First Aid is to have faith that God loves me and will get me through my trauma and back to Living Well.

Here is a piece of wisdom: “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience.” The quote is by Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (1881-1955), the French philosopher and Jesuit priest.

The present human experience that is giving me pain is temporal relating to earthly natural time as opposed to the eternal which is supernatural and is my spiritual home. But in my human experience, the only way I can see my spiritual home, where all is eternally well is through Faith.

And so, through faith, I can just decide that, regardless of my human condition, I am well.

“If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” (Mark 9:23).    “Without faith it is impossible to please God.” (Hebrews 1:6), but if we can believe, all things are possible!”

This world is divided into two groups: those who make it happen and those who ask, “What happened?”  The one group has faith, and the other group does not!

The battle lines are drawn between believers and unbelievers, between the faithful and those without faith, between the optimists and pessimists and between people of action and those who do nothing but sit on their hands!

So my word to you (and myself) is have faith that God will bring you through. Then act … and do, and move on to Living Well.

Shalom.

#2 Do Good

Do Good! That is the most powerful tip for living well. The Universe is wired to shower rewards on you if you do something good for another person … or animal.

Giving money to a charity is nice but not the best way to reap the reward of a blessed life. You, personally doing the good deed is what God loves … and rewards.

Dark anger roils through much of the world today. Anger flows through many people. But if you are alert you will see opportunities for yourself to provide some good deed that, like a ray of sunshine, will brighten the corner where you are. Even for the angry people. Especially for the angry people. It’s a powerful healing force.

Doing good results from a mental decision that runs counter to the body’s reflex responses to conserve energy.  While it is a free will decision made by each individual body, once it is made and acted on by one member of a society, there is an invisible “follow the crowd” imperative that works on the minds of the rest of that society. The psychic and material well being of the society improves by a multiple of the “do good” energy expended.

So … do you want to improve your life? Do you want to live better? I strongly suggest you observe the world around you … and you will see individuals … leaders … who are brightening the corner where they are by “doing good.”

You will see the person on the crowded bus or subway stand and offer their seat to an elderly or more infirm person. You will see someone who organizes a “free coffee hour” for their neighbors. Then get donation of coffee and day-old doughnuts from a local business, and prepares a spread in the morning to share with the neighbors as they share fellowship over the free repast. And more examples that spread invisible radiations that foster feelings of well being.

Yes, do good and you will reap the invisible reward of Living Well.

# 41 Unconditional Love

Hey Biddies and Geezers, practice unconditional love and you can fix your life and be part of fixing the entire world. Really!

14 years ago as a 72 year old geezer I wrote “Welcome’s Today: a tale of unconditional love and quantum physics.” I just read it again and I am amazed how much of it is coming true. Part of the story is how unconditional love will transform the middle east by the power of God’s love.

But also … how God’s Love is explained by science, especially the science of quantum physics.

And all of this is cast in the relationship of a guy and his remarkable cat.

Like cats? Like science? Wonder about love? And Life? Spend a little time and read my book. It’s available on Amazon Kindle as an ebook and an audiobook. Click the link:

#35 Starting Over: The Decision

In the wee hours of the morning I made the decision. I’m going to start my life over. Reboot. Seems to help my computer and has helped me before.

Start over at 85?  Shouldn’t I just concentrate on putting my affairs in order and just die? No way!

“Putting my Affairs in order?” In order for what? I’ll tell you what I need to do. Change what is not working and start over. Another part of my  Decision is to write some of these things down and pass them along to you, my reader. Hey, some day you may decide not to accept where your life is heading. So this is a log (blog?) of what is working for me. So here we go!

I’m sitting on a pillow thrown over a folding chair in front of my sliding glass doors. I have a view of the Boston skyline and Fore River. I’m writing in a black marble composition book propped on a high wooden stool. Writing with a blue Bic pen. Simple.

And I have closed down my mind to only the thoughts and sensations of the very moment. Unplugged from the past or the future. The future waits for my command. I say, “I’m happy!”

And my mind sends signals that send happy juices throughout my body. Healing has begun.

Now I stimulate myself with a cuppa coffee. Instan with milk and sugar.and I think, “Doug … something must be wrong with you that you want to start life over.” And you may wonder if I am going to tell you.

Not going to happen. But I will say this. Back in the day, many years ago, I worked for a few years at Guideposts, founded by Norman Vincent Peale. Norman changed the world. Transformed the lives of many people from sadness and misery to joy and fulfilment. Norman wrote a book and taught many sermons on “The Power of Positive Thinking.”

Change your thinking and change your life.  Like the old song says:

You gotta accentuate the positive,
Eliminate the negative,
An’ latch on
To the affirmative
Don’t mess with mister in-between!

You gotta spread joy up to the maximum,
Bring gloom down to the minimum,
An’ have faith (amen!)
Or pandemonium’s
Liable to walk upon the scene.

Listen to the once famous Bing Crosby sing it:

So … that’s my decision. And I will tell you more of the adventures in the following blogs.
