# 53 Our Autumn Years

For us Biddies and Geezers the time has come to realize we ain’t in the summer of our lives any more. But it ain’t winter yet. Sure, there are lots of things we just can not do anymore, or should not do. But this time of our lives was made by God for some very special activities that can only be done in Our Autumn Years.

Take a clue from the leaves of the trees. In the summer they are green and very busy. The leaves produce food for the trees by converting the energy in sunlight into chemical energy that the tree can eat. The structures within the leaves convert the energy and make it possible for the tree to get food. Green chlorophyll is the molecule in the structure of the leaves that takes the energy in sunlight to turn water and carbon dioxide gas into sugar and oxygen gas. But the autumn is that time of year when the leaves gradually lose their green hue and their true colors come out.

I am always in awe at the various brilliant colors of the trees share with us in the autumn. But back to us Biddies and Geezers. We have beautiful things to share in our autumn. I still remember many of the things my grandmother shared with me when ai was a little boy.  They were good for me then. But there are several things she shared that I  have not understood or appreciated until now in the autumn of my life.

And there are things we can do for the generation behind us, like watching their kids while they get a chance to be by themselves.

I could go on and on … but I shall not because this is really about you and you have a different “autumn color” than I do. Share that in …

The Autumn of Your Years.

# 51 Hitting a Brick Wall

Ow! Ow! Ow!

I just hit a brick wall.

These days seniors like us hit many brick walls Some because of health and age issues. Some because of financial problems. The wall I hit was about a relationship.

In my 80+ years of life I have learned much about getting through tough spots. Persistence and prayer usually work. But a brick wall? Butting my head against a brick wall can just get me hurt … not through it. If I keep trying I just get angry and bitter. Not good. I want to live my geezer years in joy!

Why is there a brick wall between me and the person, (a woman) in the relationship? There could be one of two reasons. The obvious reason is that the other person wants no more of me. Forcibly trying to break through that wall would be harassment. I don’t want that. But there is another possibility. It could be that God put the brick wall there because I was getting hurt in the relationship and God was watching my back. Butting my head against a wall that God built is dumb and stupid.

Is there another way? Another way to live my geezer years in joy? Yes there is but there is a little pain involved. I need to change, like look and move in a new direction. Change always requires a little pain … for a while … but it is good pain.

And so I look in a new direction. And see new people. And there are no walls.

I guess God has my back!

# 40 God Laughs

God laughs!

Didn’t anyone tell you? He laughed. He will laugh and he is laughing now. He laughs victoriously because he always wins. It’s a joy!

Who told you that God is angry? Did that person want something from you? Could they get God to smile on you?

The time has come to spread the Good News. God laughs and wants you to laugh and be in joy with Him. (With Him in you.) For that reason I have begun writing a new book, “God Laughs: God in Us.” It will take about a year to write it. Maybe I will post some completed chapters on this blog during the year.

Some may remember the shortest verse in the Bible, “Jesus wept.” How could that be when “God Laughs?” watch this space for my blogs and you will get the simple answer.

#35 Starting Over: The Decision

In the wee hours of the morning I made the decision. I’m going to start my life over. Reboot. Seems to help my computer and has helped me before.

Start over at 85?  Shouldn’t I just concentrate on putting my affairs in order and just die? No way!

“Putting my Affairs in order?” In order for what? I’ll tell you what I need to do. Change what is not working and start over. Another part of my  Decision is to write some of these things down and pass them along to you, my reader. Hey, some day you may decide not to accept where your life is heading. So this is a log (blog?) of what is working for me. So here we go!

I’m sitting on a pillow thrown over a folding chair in front of my sliding glass doors. I have a view of the Boston skyline and Fore River. I’m writing in a black marble composition book propped on a high wooden stool. Writing with a blue Bic pen. Simple.

And I have closed down my mind to only the thoughts and sensations of the very moment. Unplugged from the past or the future. The future waits for my command. I say, “I’m happy!”

And my mind sends signals that send happy juices throughout my body. Healing has begun.

Now I stimulate myself with a cuppa coffee. Instan with milk and sugar.and I think, “Doug … something must be wrong with you that you want to start life over.” And you may wonder if I am going to tell you.

Not going to happen. But I will say this. Back in the day, many years ago, I worked for a few years at Guideposts, founded by Norman Vincent Peale. Norman changed the world. Transformed the lives of many people from sadness and misery to joy and fulfilment. Norman wrote a book and taught many sermons on “The Power of Positive Thinking.”

Change your thinking and change your life.  Like the old song says:

You gotta accentuate the positive,
Eliminate the negative,
An’ latch on
To the affirmative
Don’t mess with mister in-between!

You gotta spread joy up to the maximum,
Bring gloom down to the minimum,
An’ have faith (amen!)
Or pandemonium’s
Liable to walk upon the scene.

Listen to the once famous Bing Crosby sing it:

So … that’s my decision. And I will tell you more of the adventures in the following blogs.

# 26 How to Change the World

I was feeling a little down. I write my little books and stories hoping they will bring some enjoyment to the readers. Make their day a little brighter. And I have gotten some good comments back from some readers. But I wish a lot more of the world would read them. Was feeling a little blue … but then I remembered a hymn we used to sing … with enthusiasm … in my Sunday School. It was written by Ina D. Ogden in 1913. Early in her life, Ogdon had hoped to preach on the Chautauqua circuit. However, her father’s illness forced her to abandon her plans for an evangelistic career, in order to care for him at home. She wrote these encouraging words showing how one can serve the Lord in many different ways and circumstances. In other words, make the best of where you find yourself.

Here are the lyrics:

  1. Do not wait until some deed of greatness you may do,
    Do not wait to shed your light afar;
    To the many duties ever near you now be true,
    Brighten the corner where you are.

    • Refrain:
      Brighten the corner where you are!
      Brighten the corner where you are!
      Someone far from harbor you may guide across the bar;
      Brighten the corner where you are!
  2. Just above are clouded skies that you may help to clear,
    Let not narrow self your way debar;
    Though into one heart alone may fall your song of cheer,
    Brighten the corner where you are.
  3. Here for all your talent you may surely find a need,
    Here reflect the bright and Morning Star;
    Even from your humble hand the Bread of Life may feed,
    Brighten the corner where you are.

Now the facts. That little song has been recorded and sung by Ela Fitzgerald, Burl Ives, and other famous groups and changed the world of many people. And the idea is still true.

Don’t fret the many, many people who are trying to change the world by making other people miserable with violent demonstration. You and I can with a kind wor or a small act Brighten the Corner Where We Are and the brightness can spread around the world.

You are important. A little piece I wrote about how important you are is It’s All About you: :
